Willys Quad 1940

Willys Quad 1940

The Willys Quad 1940 holds a significant place in military history as it was the original prototype designed for the US Army during World War II. The vehicle was engineered to meet the Army’s demand for a durable, versatile and rugged utility vehicle that could navigate any terrain, and it served as the basis for the later Willys MA 1941.

The Willys Quad 1940 was a result of an Army competition to create a standardized four-wheel-drive vehicle that could be used for reconnaissance, command, and general transport duties. In response, Willys-Overland Motors, Inc. designed and manufactured the Quad 1940, which impressed the Army with its off-road capabilities, low weight, and simplicity of design.

As the prototype for the Willys MA 1941, the Quad 1940 was a critical stepping stone in the development of the iconic Jeep that became an essential vehicle for the US Army during World War II. The Willys MA 1941 incorporated many improvements over the Quad 1940, including a redesigned suspension, stronger frame, and improved engine, but the basic design elements that made the Quad 1940 so successful remained intact.
